How do dependent care balances work?

Dependent Care Flexible Spending Account (FSA) operate on a “pay as you go” basis. Your Dependent Care account is funded upon confirmation of your payroll deductions by your employer. Once Vita Flex receives employer confirmation that the payroll deductions have occurred, the funds will become available to your Dependent Care account and for claims reimbursement.

This is different than how Health FSAs work. Under a Health FSA, your full annual election amount is available to you at the beginning of your plan year.

Why is my balance $0?

If you notice that your Dependent Care FSA has a negative balance, you likely submitted a claim that was in excess of your available funds. If the full claim was approved, reimbursements will continue to be processed as additional Dependent Care funds are deposited to your account. Typically, this takes place after new salary reductions are processed through payroll.
